‘Hybrid Folk’

At Trinity Laban every year we celebrate music creation with CoLab - 2 weeks of intense interdepartmental collaboration.

HYBRID FOLK is the name of the project I had lead this year. Simple idea - to celebrate folk traditions with contemporary approaches.
Between 14th and 18th of February, 12 people, who has never met each other got to work together to pull off a creation of several songs, a lunchtime performance at St Alfege Church in Greenwich and a recording session.

Mentored by Will Dutta we created 6 songs in 4 days and rehearsed for the performance. We used improvisation, some of minimalist techniques (after Feldman), graphic scores, synths.. as well as standard notation, elements of bell canto and a lot of pentatonic scale! Everyone enjoyed themselves in this creative hybrid of different cultures.

In the video above you can hear some of our reflections about the process alongside the music we created.
